The use of laser cutting for book-making is of great interest to me. This was my first project using a laser cutter. I decided to make a publication about the city I live in—Auckland.
I created each spread in Illustrator and then brought it into Rhino 3D for final adjustments. The use of the laser cutter allowed for very fine cut-out details that could not be produced by hand. The holes required to bind the book were also laser cut, eliminating the need to measure and punch them out with an awl. Additionally, small perforations were laser cut through the middle of each spread in order to create a clean page fold in the thick card stock. Finally the book cover and its holes were cut from a sheet of MDF. The book was hand-bound using a coptic stitch technique.
